Why We Give

” ‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.’ ”
    – Malachi 3:10 NIV

This is the only place in scripture where the Lord invites us, dares us even, to test Him in the area of our finances. Tithe joyfully with a heart that has determined to trust Him and He will faithfully and abundantly bless us.

Giving Tithes and Offerings

The first time offerings are mentioned in the Bible is with Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain gave what he wanted, the fruit of the ground, while Abel gave what God wanted, the first born of his flock and the fat. Cain was angry at his brother Abel because Abel’s offering gained him more favor with God. (Genesis 4:5-8 NKJV) Sacrificial offerings draw God’s attention and activate His provisions stored up for us in the spiritual realm. (Matthew 6:19 NKJV)  It’s no wonder that offerings can be a source of conflict; it actually led to the first murder in the Bible when Cain slew Abel.

Noah built an altar and offered sacrificial offerings immediately after the global flood subsided. The Lord said, “while the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” Seed has to be sown (given) in order for a harvest to be received. (Genesis 8:22 NKJV)

Ten generations later, Abraham gave a tithe (tenth) of all he had to the King/Priest Melchizedek after he pronounced a blessing upon him. (Genesis 14:18-20 NKJV) Giving or seed time and harvest are the law of the spiritual realm that preceded the Levitical law which came later by Moses. We give because that’s how we honor God; and also in response to how He blesses us with a harvest of increase.

Giving locates our heart and what we value.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21 NKJV

Giving is how we show relational generosity.

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”Matthew 6:19-21 NLT

Our giving also releases God’s provision in our lives and in the church.

Bring all the tithe into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!” Malachi 3:10 NLT

We believe that generosity can be measured in three ways:
Forgiving, Giving and Thanksgiving are all essential to a healthy relationship with God, ourselves and others.
