Full Assurance In The Heart – Day 48

June 9, 2011

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.

Psalms 36:7

King David had a personal relationship with God; the scriptures say he was a man after God’s own heart.

…He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’

Acts 13:22

David wrote of the many of attributes of the God he loved and served, but he was most drawn toward the heart of God which was demonstrated by His lovingkindness.

The Vine’s Expository Dictionary states that lovingkindness has three basic meanings,  which always interact: “strength,” “steadfastness,” and “love.” Any understanding of the word that fails to suggest all three inevitably loses some of its richness.  “Love” by itself easily becomes sentimentalized or universalized apart from the covenant. Yet “strength” or “steadfastness” suggests only the fulfillment of a legal or other obligation.

In the Hebrew the word for lovingkindness is a relational word that was not only a matter of obligation; it is also of generosity. It is not only a matter of loyalty, but also of mercy. This word implies personal involvement and commitment in a relationship beyond the rule of law.

King David understood that God’s love was more than a feeling.  That God’s love was not just faithful and steadfast because he was legally obligated to His creation.  David knew that God’s lovingkindness represented the relational connect God has with His people.  He understood this type of love to be the actions of a generous and merciful God whose commitment was beyond the rule of law, but one of a relational connect such as in the covenant of marriage.

David came to value the most precious of all of God’s attributes; His lovingkindness.  For in His lovingkindness, he found a love that never ends, is always faithful and generous in mercy.

As you forge ahead today, you too can have full assurance in your heart if your life is filled with God’s precious a love that never fails.

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You.
