Full Assurance In The Heart – Day 37May 26, 2011
23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
If there is a time where you can face a battle with your faith, for me it is when your child is ill. In Mark 9, a father brings his child who is in great distress, to the disciples to pray for his boy. But, the disciples had not yet developed their faith to produce the desired results.
Yet, the father did not give up; he went straight to Jesus with his need. In response to the father’s request, Jesus addressed the disciples indirectly, as he directly answers the father with this statement: “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
The father then answers Jesus honestly as he cried out with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” I am always amazed at Jesus’ reaction. He does not rebuke the father; he did not preach at the father; he simply heals the boy.
Later that day, the disciples asked; why could they not release the child from its infirmity? Jesus again does not rebuke, but gives them a response that releases wisdom that will grow great faith. Jesus said some things require prayer and fasting.
In this parable we can learn two things about growing great faith, whether we are a parent or a disciple.
As a parent, when in a time of need; don’t give up; go to Jesus with an honest heart and declare as the father did; “I believe, help my unbelief.” Because, Jesus will meet me there!
As a disciple, if be willing to cultivate your faith; spend more time in His presence mediating on the faithfulness of God, and your ability to believe will increase. Then join this time together with fasting; as you decrease, He will increases in strength as you surrender the things that feed the flesh so you can feed your spirit.
So whether you are in a time of need or learning to cultivate great faith, simply come to Jesus with full assurance in your heart and ask Him for what you need. He is always ready to respond with wisdom and might.
5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
