Full Assurance In The Heart – Day 35

May 24, 2011

22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.” 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Matthew 15:22-28

This testimony is not just a story of a life changed by the presence of Jesus, but it is a lesson in growing great faith. What were the characteristics of this woman; who, although not a Jew, was able to receive from the hand of God that which technically was not hers to have?

One would say it is because she was persistent and didn’t give up; and that is true. But why was she persistent? Because of the impact of the life of Jesus as He went about doing good. This caused her to become a believer in the goodness of God. She had heard the stories of this gracious love, that freely forgave people of their sin, giving them a chance to begin again. Those stories opened her heart to the truth that God is love.

As a mother who deeply loved her child, she could not imagine, the power of love rejecting a request born out of loving desperation. Her love compelled her to face the potential of being rejected and scorned. Her love for her child compelled her to endure whatever the challenge to secure a new beginning; it made her persistent against all the odds. Yet in that love, she knew there was a perfect love greater than her own and she needed the power of that Love to intervene on her child’s behalf.

It was her confidence in the character and nature of who Jesus was and what He represented that empowered her persistence. Jesus called that faith; a faith that would not quit until they received the desired result.

As you forge ahead today, have the same full assurance in your heart as this woman. Trust in the character and nature of a God whose love is greater than any love you have or have ever experienced. Because faith understands that love will find a way!
