Forsaking All I Trust Him – Day 24

August 8, 2011

…”As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord.  I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.  So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

1 Samuel 1:26-28

In this story of Samuel, we can see the truth in evidence of one of “forsaking all” because of their trust in God.  Hannah was a woman whose desire was to have a child.  But as the years passed her hopes were dashed.  Then one day she went to the house of God and cried out to the Lord. The Lord heard her prayers and she gave birth to her son.

So in the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

1 Samuel 1:20

Hannah being overjoyed with the gift of her child never forgot that Samuel was a blessing from the Lord.  She never allowed the gift of God to become the central thing that directed her life. In her gratitude, and joy she recognized that her role was to be a good steward of what God had blessed her with.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

James 1:17

In response Hannah nurtured the boy with a goal in mind; to prepare him for service for the Lord. She understood that she was a legacy investor and not just the collector of the good things of God.   She received her blessing as not something owed to her or a right, but a gift to be cherished with a purpose.

So many times in life, we can pray and ask God for something very important to us.  Then when He answers, we can find ourselves making “the answer” the central theme of our focus, forgetting that we are blessed for a purpose.   Hannah’s love for God was greater than her need to be a mom.   She did not allow her love for Samuel to be greater than her love for God, even though Samuel was the fulfillment of a deep desire.   Her blessings only reinforced her love and commitment for God.  Causing her to be willing to “forsake” her “need” to see heaven’s need accomplished.  Heaven needed a man who would arise for righteousness in the Land, and Samuel became that man, because Hannah trusted God.

What answers to prayer have you received that was intended to become the seed that would meet heavens need?  People who have forsaken all are a people who live their lives fulfilling the kingdoms purpose with the blessings they have received. Because they have placed their joy and trust not in their answer, but in the One who is the Answer.
