As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.

Psalms 42:1

As I read the Psalms, I am humbled at the transparency of David in his pursuit of God.  David a mighty warrior, who was a king and led a whole nation, remained ever aware of His need for God and ever hungry to know Him.

I have deer that come by very early just at dawn to seek out their water and food.  It’s beautiful to watch as they instinctively go to the source of supply for their day.  David says he longs and is drawn toward God as the deer is drawn to the water.

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.  

Psalms 63:1

David, did not just long for God, he knew he needed to make a God connect early in his day if he was going to have the supply that he needed to succeed.  He had come to realize that without the presence of God in his life, he would be living a reactionary life and not a responsive life.

The word early is not just talking about the time of day.  Although seeking God, before everyone else has time to make their demands upon you will help keep you focused and not driven.  Seeking God early will help you to prioritize your day and not allow the good to steal the best in your life.

The word early also refers to seeking Him before making your decision to do or not to do something.   So many times we are living reactive lives, bringing God in after the fact instead of before.   Seeking God early means we are presenting our plans to the Lord asking Him for wisdom and insight before taking those needed steps into our day or our decisions. 

When we seek God early, we are pursuing Him at the dawn of our issues with a diligence and not waiting till we are at the eve of our problems trying to find a resolve.  David understood that as the deer needs water, he needed his God to sustain him.

Rise early in your day, arise early in your circumstances, do not procrastinate, but diligently seek God for the wisdom you need and you will discover the waters of truth that will sustain you and bless you.
