E100 Devotion – Day 27June 1, 2012
Reading: Judges 4-5
Deborah leads Israel
After eighty years of peace and prosperity Israel again does evil in the sight of the Lord! Israel continues its repetitive pattern, much like the church of today, of straying away from God in “good times”. As a result they again find themselves in bondage to ungodly oppressors.
The King Jabin their oppressor’s name means intelligent or intelligence. How easily we fall prey to intellectual bondage when we seek to go “our own way.” Little do we know that we have fallen under the power of spiritual forces, who rule us through spiritual and intellectual pride.
For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the North; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.
Israel begins to suffer from their intellectually superior oppressors and in their suffering begin to cry out to God. This intellectual pride had also permeated Israel’s leadership who were greatly divided and in complete disunity. But, God brings the light into their intellectually dark lives through the Prophet Deborah, the wife of Lapidoth. The judge, who’s name (Lapidoth) means lantern of light.
By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well advised is wisdom.
Satan rules through pride but God rules through humble wisdom.
… “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”
God uses a woman Deborah to lead the battle against pride and another woman named Jael, to nail proud Sisera to the ground. God comes to Israel’s aid in ways that not only delivered them from their oppressors but also from the oppression caused by their own pride and complacency.
.. God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.
1 Corinthians 1:27
Remember, when people can’t agree on what to do (because of pride) complacency sets in. Deborah’s leadership and intercession brings down a heavenly angelic attack
“They fought from the heaven; the stars from their courses fought against Sisera…”
