E100 Devotions – Day 21

May 26, 2012

Reading: Exodus 19:1-20:21

Moses functions as a Christ like mediator between God and His chosen people. He wants the people to experience God’s presence within appropriate boundaries. The people are quick to agree to do what God commands but then withdrew from His presence, out of fear.

It’s important to recognize that God didn’t start out with Israel by giving commands.  He started by blessing, protecting and delivering them from Egypt.  He took them out of the world, saving them from it.  Now He is by commandment or by His Word taking the world out of them.

You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagle’s wings and brought you to Myself.  Now therefore, If you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you shall be a special treasure above all people; for all the earth is mine.
Exodus 19:4-5

God’s desire for His people was to empower them through His spoken, presence filled Word. But they pulled back from that asking instead that God’s Word come through the mediator Moses. To obey God’s Word We need personal contact (faith) with it.

God ultimately had a better plan for them. They couldn’t come to God in their sinful state so God came to them through Jesus Christ the living Word to give them by grace, a life of righteousness, peace and joy.

But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, in as much as He is also mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.
Hebrews 8:6

In this covenant God would put His law in their minds and write them on their hearts, transforming their thoughts and desires, making the old covenant obsolete. There’s no need for rules when you don’t think about or desire to break them!

If not for the Ten Commandments, sinful man would never know his sinful state or his need for a Savior and complete heart change. Thank God for changing your heart today and ask for all His desires to become yours?

I will give them a desire to respect me completely, and I will put inside them a new way of thinking. I will take out the stubborn heart of stone from their bodies, and I will give them an obedient heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 11:19
