E100 Devotional – Day 39

June 13, 2012

Reading: 1 Kings 16:29-19:18

God calls Israel to repentance and confronts their idolatry. King Ahab not only continued to promote idolatry like those before him but went a step further. He decreed by law Baal to be the national deity over Israel, and even built a temple to honor him.

Elijah built an altar and asked the prophets of Baal to build their altar and said “Let’s see whose God answers by fire”. It was a challenge that couldn’t be declined since their deity was proclaimed to be the new national God. The Phoenician image of the sun depicts Baal as the fire god that gives light, heat and life.

Elijah challenged, mocked and ridiculed all of their prideful pomp and displays. For hours they cry out to their god in vain. Elijah rebuilds his altar and circles it with 12 stones one for each tribe of Israel. He even poured 12 barrels of water on his altar, soaking the wood and filling a trench with the overflowing water.

Then, the God of Elijah by His Word brings down fire upon his altar, showing whose God was the national God of Israel. The fire consumes not only the sacrifices but the wood, dust, 12 stones and even the water in the trench surrounding the altar.

Moses came as the deliverer. Elijah came as the reformer. The deliverer warns the enemy. The reformer warns God’s people to turn back to God or face judgment of their sins. Backslidden Israel didn’t want an Elijah message of repentance and reformation; they wanted a Moses message of more blessings to come. Are we ready for the Elijah anointing?

The Elijah anointing isn’t pastoral and nurturing. Elijah came to shake them, wake them and make them repent. The end times will be a time of reformation and confrontation. The Elijah anointing will usher in the return of the Lord, with signs, wonders and miracles.

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

Malachi 4:5
