E100 Devotion – Day 95

August 8, 2012

Reading: 1 John 3:11-4:21

How do we know we have eternal life? How do we know real love? How do we know that we know the truth? How do we know that He abides in us? How do we know what’s the Spirit of God and what isn’t? How do we know the difference between the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error? John tells us how to know if we’re on target and what’s God and what’s not.

We know we have eternal life because we love others, and if we hate our brother, we’re murderers and don’t have eternal life. It’s not the absence of hate but the presence of love that identifies eternal life. If we’re offended with a brother or sister in Christ and that’s keeping us from loving them, we’re operating in hatred because there’re only two choices; light or darkness; love or hate. Forgive them; it’s an act of love that starts by faith.

We know we love others, not just because we forgive them, but because we lay down our lives for them. When we see them in need of necessities and we can help them, we do.

We know we know the truth because we do the truth, by keeping His commands, seeking to please Him, and loving one another.

We know He abides in us by the Spirit whom He has given us. We know how to test what is the Spirit of God and what is the spirit of the Antichrist, by its confession of Christ.

We know we’re of God because we listen to a different voice than that of the world. We also know we are loved by God and His love lives through us and us through Him. His love for us, fully matured in us, casts out all fear, because we know He’s for us and not against us, just as we are for and not against each other. This makes us confident and bold in approaching God, because there is no fear, when we’ve fully experienced His love.
