E100 Devotion – Day 88

August 1, 2012

Reading: 2 Timothy 2

The greatest strength of a spiritual soldier’s endurance is the grace of God. Whenever we enter into God’s grace, we move beyond mere human ability – into divine ability. No greater place is grace demonstrated than through great endurance. By grace Jesus endured the cross.

Paul uses three examples when illustrating endurance. A soldier, an athlete, and a farmer are each exemplary of endurance. We need grace to:

  • Endure conflict as a soldier fighting against spiritual attacks as they offensively advance the Kingdom of God.
  • Endure conditioning as an athlete who has to restrict, discipline and chasten his body in readiness for contending with an opponent of the truth.
  • Endure harvesting as a farmer who must sow seed and cultivate in for themselves and others, looking for the harvest of the seed they’ve sown.

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart (faint).
Galatians 6:9

Why is endurance so important? What we can receive from God is proportional and conditional to our endurance! Obedience is reliant upon endurance. Character is gorged in the fires of enduring trials. Fruit is harvested through enduring laborers; we will reap only if we faint not. Faith also grows only through enduring conflict. That’s why we must fight the good fight of faith.

Endurance grows as we sow to the Spirit, when we really want to give in to (or sow to) the flesh. The outcomes of life will be determined by which we chose to sow to, and whether we continue to endure through.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
Galatians 6:7-8

Don’t quit sowing to the Spirit; keep fighting soldier; keep going athlete and keep growing farmer – because God is not mocked, whatsoever we sow, that will we reap.
