E100 Devotion – Day 43

Reading: Psalms 103:1-22

This Psalm gives us a glimpse into the heart of a spiritual leader. King David takes command of his soul (his mind, will and emotions) and directs it to bless the Lordship of God. He reminds himself of God’s blessings and benefits.

Good leaders remember where they came from and who their source is. God leads His people more like a father than a boss. He leads us with vision and with the big picture in mind, while sticking to His priorities, not ours.

The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
Psalms 103:13

A spiritual leader understands that God models His leadership, not only for us to follow Him, but for us to lead others by. We see that David wasn’t self confident, he was God confident. He was aware that he needed to know God more than men and seek His direction before seeking advice from others.

David overcame selfish ambition through self-sacrifice; he found and followed God’s ways, instead of going his own way. That made him God dependant instead of independent. Unlike Saul the king before him, he enjoyed serving instead of commanding his followers.

Spiritual leaders prefer Holy Spirit power over the power of their personality. Holy Spirit power leads and we connect to it by following. Others connect with spiritual leaders by following them instead of being driven. David led others by following God and leading his followers by the same model.

Leadership is more than just the nuts and bolts of directing others. Spiritual leadership reveals to followers how God directs and develops their leader. People know after a while who or what their leader is being led or driven by in the way they’re being led.

The journey leaders take others on shows others the journey their leader is on. More people follow their leaders when they want to go and grow where their leader is going and growing. Leadership is more about what we’re becoming and learning while we’re following God and how it’s benefitting others.

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
