E100 Devotion – Day 33

June 7, 2012

Reading: 1 Samuel 16:1-18:16

God told Samuel “I have provided Myself a King, and to go and anoint him.
1Samuel 16:1

God works in our lives in seeming obscurity to develop us for His purpose and calling. We can be so unaware that we are God’s provision in progress! This lack of awareness can be reinforced by those around us. Sometimes the people in our own families can be the greatest re-enforcers of our perceptions of worthlessness.

David’s own father totally overlooked him and excluded him from this great event of Samuels visit with the whole family. Separation from our siblings can be a part of God’s intentional development in our lives. David had been completely convinced he would never get his brothers approval and this better prepared him to obey God and not be infected with the please disease, like so many leaders are.

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7

God chooses leaders, not for their looks, or for their past, or according to man’s pecking order, or age or tenure over their ability. God looks at their heart. It’s important to note that the shepherds in David’s day were all warrior trained by the vigorous wilderness terrain, they traveled in daily, while leading their sheep. Not to mention the wild animals, thieves and robbers that was so common.

When he asks about killing Goliath and what the reward was, they accused him of being full of pride. But David doesn’t let that stop him from carrying out justice and fulfilling his divine call and destiny.

David chose the tried and proven weapons in his life to kill Goliath. He ran right up to Goliath and made a bold confession of his faith, and won a renown victory in the name of the Lord. Like David, choose to be a victor, not a victim because you’ve been misjudged, overlooked and criticized.
