E100 Devotion – Day 29

June 3, 2012

Reading: Judges 13:1-16:31

Samson Defeats the Philistines

Samson is the perfect example of how someone can have a great start and finish miserably. His mother was barren and an Angel of the Lord appears to tell her she will have a son and to follow a strict Nazarene diet. Samson was born in the right family!  He was raised with a good spiritual foundation, and took the Nazarite vow, eating and drinking nothing that comes from the vine or that is unclean.

Samson experiences the supernatural strength and power of God, but begins to take it for granted. He fails to address his glaring character weaknesses. He picks a pagan wife, sleeps with a prostitute, who ultimately destroyed him. Like Samson when we neglect to repair our character flaws they only worsen!

Samson also acted impulsively picking a wife, rashly. He made bets without thinking and got into battles because of his bad temper. He was also deceptive, not telling the whole truth. The deceiver Samson was deceived by the deceiver and seducer Delilah. He also misused his anointing of strength and power given to deliver Israel for personal revenge.

Samson’s self centered, undisciplined and arrogant nature, made him unteachable. He leaned on his own strength and understanding and didn’t seek guidance from God or others, not even his own Godly parents.

Pride will destroy a person; a proud attitude leads to ruin.
