Day 32 – Discipleship

March 1, 2011

Dear Disciple of the Lord;

In the book of John, Jesus gives us a criteria in which we can assess clearly if we are His disciples.

31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 8:31-32 (NKJV)

In the King James version the word abide is translated in the Greek as follows: [verb;] to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy) :- abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for),

As disciples one of the qualifying markers in our life is that we are a people who are abiding, continuing, enduring, remaining, standing, and living in the now, in the word of God.  We are a people who have chosen the Word of God to be the final authority in our life.  We are a people who understand that the Word is the Bread He gives to our spirit man which causes us to grow, mature and maintain our strength. As disciples, the Word’s priority in our life is not just one of mental ascent, but of heart conviction.

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being…

Acts 17:28 (KJV)

Jesus then goes on to say how you and I can measure the abiding presence of the Word in our life:

32 and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

If we are a people who are abiding in His Word, our level of freedom will be ever increasing as the Word has a liberating affect on our lives. Are you walking in the freedom that He has secured for you on the Cross?  Freedom is a present state which we receive when Jesus becomes our Lord. And it is also a progressive state in the sense that our freedom is taking hold of our lives day by day as the truth becomes a part of our thinking, our doing and our being.

My prayer is that in this journey, you have renewed or begun a fresh new love affair with the Word of God.  As the Word is the essence of God’s heart written in a language you can perceive and understand, so that you can gain more of God inside of you.  Just as you eat food, it is broken down and becomes a part of who you are, that is what it is like when you feast upon His Word and begin to digest it and allow it to be one in you.  As I close, let’s ponder on the words of Psalm 119:

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.

Psalms 119:9 (NKJV)

11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Psalms 119:11 (KJV)

37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way. 38 Establish Your word to Your servant, Who is devoted to fearing You.

Psalms 119:37-38 (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, I thank You for giving us Your Word to sustain us.  We desire to be a people of your Word. Strengthen us as we choose to take heed to your word and hide it in our hearts.  We ask for your help to empower us to set our gaze upon that which has eternal value.  Establish us in Your truth and free us to live liberated whole lives for your glory.  In this season we renew our commitment to walk humbly before you in respect and reverence for the things you have declared by Your Word, In Jesus Name we pray.  AMEN
You are free to live for Him.
