Day 5 – Devotion

February 4, 2011

Dear Devoted Follower of Jesus;
The first day of the week is a great day to focus on first things first; “Devotion to the One who first loved us!”  The scriptures give us instruction as to how we should conduct our attitude and our posture during seasons where we consecrate our time in prayer and fasting.

16 Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face 18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:16-24 (NASB)

In this season of prayer and fasting, do not fast in a manner that others know you are in a season of sacrifice, or season of denial.  We are encouraged to take a stand which says, look your best, behave your best, and allow others see the real you emerging not the dying flesh.  Our reward is not in others acknowledging our sacrifice, but in God acknowledging our sacrifice!

It has been 5 days since you have begun this journey of surrender, many of you may be saying, “Why Am I doing this?  Let me encourage you that your gain is for far more than what you will receive in this life, but what will be stored up and gained in the heavens.

19 “Do not store up for your treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
It truly is a season of uncovering our hearts from all the stuff that is hiding our love for God and His Kingdom. Times of consecration bring clarity to our eye; our spiritual eye, so that the light of God can be seen in us.  When we surrender the things of the flesh, it brings a new clarity to us body, soul and spirit.
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Seasons of prayer and fasting, gives us time to reflect, rest, and restore the state of our hearts. I pray that we will become singular in our focus, and in our pursuit.  It is a season to recalibrate our hearts.  Are you willing for Him to reveal to you where you might be divided in your affections and pursuit? Are you hungry to be a person of your Word; A person of fidelity?

24 “No one can serve two masters; for either will he hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Heavenly Father, we come before you today and ask that you would create in us a clean heart and renew our spirit.  Purify our hearts from the things that separate and divide us. Rekindle the flame of our passion; trim the wick of our hearts, so that our love for you is not all smoke.  We consecrate our desires and ask that you cause them to align with your desires. In Jesus Name we pray; Amen.
